The list below summarizes the shop’s activity of the past month. Let me know if I’ve missed something or if a correction is needed…… Ron Fico
List of this month’s maintenance activities (outside of the monthly Cleanup)

1. Grizzly planer maintenance performed as a result of a loud noise heard on shutting off the unit. The noise problem is fixed, and the problems are listed
(also illustrated pictorially at the end of this article):
i. The motor shroud was loose, free to rattle, missing two screws and one screw was loose. All screws are now in place and tightened.
ii. The relay box that sits next to the motor was not mounted, free to rattle. There were two missing screws (replacements found) needed to mount the relay box.
iii. The three drive belts needed tightening. On shut-down the belts would oscillate and hit the stand-offs used to mount the belt cover. Tightening the belts prevented
them from hitting the stand-offs. The belts are worn. New belts from Grizzly are on order.
b. The table height chain was cleaned of wood debris, tightened and lubricated.
c. The gear-box sprockets and drive chains (outside the box but inside the cover), were cleaned of wood debris and lubricated.
d. On clean-up day, the gear box lube oil was changed (item CU-2 below).
e. PLEASE BE AWARE: THE DUST BIN USED FOR THE PLANER – ONE OF THE HOSES ATTACHED TO THE BIN COULD HIT THE PLANER SPEED CONTROL WHEN THE PLANER IS ON. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE PLANER GEAR BOX COULD BE DAMAGED. ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL, CHANGING POSITION OF THE SPEED CONTROL WHILE THE PLANER IS ON WILL DAMAGE THE GEAR BOX GEARS. THE SPEED CONTROL IS USED IN THE OUTERMOST POSITION (16 FEET PER MINUTE), CENTER POSITION IS NEUTRAL, AND FULLY PUSHED IN IS 30 FEET PER MINUTE.
f. Funnel dust collector screws replaced with hex sprocket screws.
2. Performax 16-32 Abrasive roll was replaced. A new 150-grit roll has been ordered. The new roll is long enough for four roll replacements.
3. The day prior to the clean-up day, a Howard County inspector showed up during the Tuesday afternoon shift and noted that the top of the central VAC ducts had sawdust on them and questioned the operation of the Central VAC unit. The unit was turned on and the inspector declared the Central VAC unit was functioning properly.
MONTHLY CLEANUP (CU) – 6/8/19
This month’s crew: J. Cummins, R. Fico, J. Simpson, R. Steiner
CU-1. Top of central VAC ductwork vacuumed.
CU-2. Grizzly planer gear-lube (80W-90) changed. The last time the gear lube was change was 3/11/2010 according to a sticker on the gear box. Prior to changing, the level of the gear lube was below the full-level requirement by 1 inch. The manual states that the gear lube should be changed every 24 hours. If the planer is used about 1.5 hours per day
(7.5 hours per week), then 24-hours of operation is reached every 3.2 weeks. It seems reasonable that a gear lube change should take place once per month.
CU-3. Bandsaw tires on both bandsaws were cleaned of residue.
CU-4. Inner and outer filters of the JET wall-mounted units were cleaned.
CU-5. Table saw blade was replaced with a newly refurbished (sharpened) blade.
