2024-09-07 September Monthly Meeting & Minutes
September 7th, the first Saturday, our monthly meeting was in person at Bain Center (info link) and virtual using Zoom technology.
The demonstration for the September meeting was “Technology and Woodworking” presented by John Biggs.
Technology and Woodworking
Integrating technology into woodworking can merge the satisfaction of traditional craftsmanship with the precision and possibilities offered by digital tools. By using digital tools, woodworkers can expand the limits of what they can achieve in wood craft.
John Biggs will share what he has learned to achieve greater accuracy, efficiency and reduce waste using these three technologies in his woodshop:
· Computer numerical control (CNC) machines use digital designs to cut, carve, and shape wood with precision and complexity. Woodworkers can create intricate designs that would be difficult or impossible to achieve by hand.
· 3D printing can be a game changer for printing custom jigs, templates and unique tool parts on demand.
· Laser cutters have opened new avenues for woodworkers by enabling precise control over the finest details for personalizing items, creating complex shapes or adding artistic touches to projects. Using laser cutters is a fast and efficient way for woodworkers to produce toys, gift items and art.
The future is here. Come to the September meeting for an introduction to new approaches to incorporate into your woodworking projects.
