Free Wood: Kentucky Coffee tree & Catalpa
HCWG members – this notice is extracted from an email sent to me by Tim Jackson.
Hi All, this just came in from Doug Bartos by way of Phil Brown . Expect several clubs there as the notice went to CAT (Capital Area Turners) and MCW (?).
To pick up some of this wood, turn right into the driveway at 13913 Darnstown Rd, Rt 28, and park far enough in on the left side of the drive so that residents on the drive can get by. This is about a block before the traffic light for Seneca Rd, Rt 112, which you can see when approaching the driveway from the east.
Today (5 Nov) crews took down the upper portions of branches. It may take them several days to finish all the way to the ground. They were gone when I arrived at 4:30 PM today, Thursday, Nov 5th. They would not want you picking up wood while they are dropping limbs. The trees are on county owned land, not the adjoining private property. The weekend should be a good time to get some of this wood, and there should be plenty for everybody.
The wood on the ground from both trees looks sound. You need a chain saw and hand truck to move most of the wood. The Kentucky Coffee tree is close to the driveway, but the Catalpa is 200 to 300 feet away, and there are a lot of sticks on the ground. Take a rake to make a path. There is no road shoulder on Rt 28 to park on next to the Catalpa tree, but they have removed the rails from the fence posts, so you might be able to pull in if there is a clear spot.
