Come join us for an afternoon with Jim Heavey, Master Contributing Craftsman to Wood Magazine. Although Jim is too modest to say, he is a woodworking rock star. With over 50 years in woodworking, Jim is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellent presenter/instructor/publisher. Jim will share his learnings over time in both a presentation and a moderated Q&A session with the audience followed by some social time to ask other questions.
Most of us woodworkers miss the in-person contact with instructors within our craft. YouTube and Zoom are fine, but there is nothing like face-to-face interaction with these educators. If you ever attended one of The Woodworking Shows, you undoubtedly will remember having attended one of Jim’s many seminars and presentations. Since The Woodworking Shows are canceled for 2022, come take advantage of this special event and get to spend some time with a true Master Craftsman.
Jim will cover the following topics:
- Jim’s favorite jigs, the why and how of jigs and how to safely and properly use them.
- Jim will bring 1 or 2 project examples and share the challenges and how he resolved them.
- Jim will bring images of the most challenging projects he has completed and explain why they were a “one and done” project.
- Jim will demystify router bits by discussing his favorites, the different types and levels of quality, and the wide variation in prices for similar-looking bits & blades. How deep do you seat a bit? How tight should one tighten the collet nut? Jim has all the answers!
Moderated Q&A Session – As time permits, the discussion will also cover an informal Q&A with questions submitted by the audience during registration. For example:
- How Jim got involved with Wood Magazine and woodworking in general?
- As a veteran woodworker, what are some of the safety practices Jim employs?
- Explain your “three mistake” rule
- Tell us about your long history and experience with TWWS
- Do you incorporate hand tools into your projects along with machine tools? If so, which ones are most used?
- Recently, your shop tour featured a wide belt sander. How do you use it in conjunction with a planer, card scraper and sanding in general?
- What’s the one thing you might have done differently in your vast experience?
- What current skills is Jim working on for personal growth and satisfaction?
- Recent projects undertaken and new educational videos he is working on for Wood Magazine
Background on Jim Heavy: Jim has been a woodworker for over 50 years and has worked for WOOD Magazine as a contributing craftsman since 1996. In addition to writing articles for the magazine and teaching at the annual Weekend With WOOD since its inception, Jim represents WOOD at national events which include touring with The Woodworking Shows. He also produces a variety of technique videos from his shop in North Carolina. Jim’s favorite projects are those he makes for friends and family and currently has a list of requests that should last a lifetime.
