Help Wanted: Community Service for HoCo Robinson Nature Center Feb 27, 2016
Several Guild member volunteers are needed by the Howard County Recreation and Parks Department’s Robinson Nature Center to perform a community service project on 27 February 2016. Guild participants will attend one or more planning sessions in advance with Meagan Leatherbury, Program Manager at Robinson Nature Center.
The anticipated program activity may look something like this:
- Occurs on Saturday morning, 27 February 2016, from 10AM – 12PM.
- Two sections of the program will be offered concurrently; one for adults and one for kids between the ages of 6 and 10.
- The program begins with a 30 to 40 minute nature trail walk to learn winter tree identification techniques. This portion will be led by Robinson Center staff members and Guild members may optionally participate in the nature hike.
- Participants return from the hike to the indoor center. Adults will be in one classroom, and children in another.
- In the first classroom, a contracted instructor will provide participants with spoon blanks and carving tools and get them started on a spoon carving project. One or more Guild member volunteers are invited to share information about the Guild and about different ways that people interesting in woodcarving can access reclaimed or repurposed wood for carving projects with these adult participants.
- In the second classroom, one or more Guild member volunteers will lead the children in a group exercise activity potentially using modeling clay and Popsicle sticks to simulate wood carving. Robinson Center staff will collaborate with these Guild member volunteers to come up with additional activities – if needed – to fill out any remaining classroom time. Child participants will be able to take their project with them at the conclusion of the session.
- The length of each classroom session may vary between 75 and 90 minutes. Children will likely have a slightly longer hike and adults a slightly longer classroom portion.
Successful outcome from this event will benefit the Robinson Nature Center programming efforts, promote woodworking and Guild membership, the community at large, and mostly the kids.
