2017-04: Beads of Courage is an Arts-in-Medicine Community Service Program
Beads of Courage is an arts-in-medicine, supportive care programs for children coping with serious illness, their families and the health care providers who care for them.
The Program is designed to support and strengthen children and families coping with serious illness. Through the program children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path. Their Beads of Courage journey begins when each child is first given a length of string and beads that spell out their first name. Then, colorful beads, each representing a different treatment milestone are given to the child by their professional health care provider to add to their Beads of Courage collection throughout their treatment.
Every child wishes they had their treasure box to keep their beads within. In order to hold the beads, turned boxes for the Beads of Courage program need to be about 6 inches in diameter (5 inches minimum), rectangular lidded boxes about 4x6x4 inches. Make sure the lids are easily removable. Also, finials should be easy for a small child to grasp and not too elaborate.
HCWG will collect Beads of Courage bowls and boxes made and donated by members during the May 2017 meeting. The bowls and boxes will be given to Dr. Ken Cooke of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center’s Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Program.
Beads of Courage, Inc. is an approved public charity under I.R.S. Code Section 501(c)(3), based in Tucson, Arizona.
