Wood Sources
I’m new to HCWG and was hoping I could get some suggestions on where to buy some wood for my first project. I plan to make a rocking horse for my granddaughter. The design pattern calls for two 2″ x 12″ x 6′ lengths of clear pine or other suitable wood. Alternatively, the wood lengths could be one 8′ and one 4′ length. I would appreciate any recommendations regarding a wood source or wood type for this project.
Thank you for all those helpful suggestions.
Larry,
I sculpted a horse for my daughter some years ago. If you are a beginner, I would use pine, poplar, or soft maple. I would paint it. I would suggest making a half or quarter size model out of construction lumber, e.g. spruce, which is inexpensive. In fact, you might be able to use glued up construction lumber to make the full size horse after you make the model. Actual 2″ lumber can be obtained from Arnold’s or other sawmills. Wood stores are usually more expensive. Also, check with Wilson lumber near the fair ground.
good luck
