My Project, Steve Appler Workshop and Custom Home
I disappeared for a year while I tore down and re-built my house. I just bought a bunch of wood from Arnold – walnut & maple, so I’ve got projects starting.
You asked for pictures of my new house project, so I sent some to myself from my phone which are attached here. The new house is built mostly on the foundation of our previous house that we deconstructed with Second Chance out of Baltimore. We removed all wood products, fixed the very badly done mid-80’s block foundation and started over with modern structure, energy packages and materials. My wife and I are professional custom homebuilders (www.cairncustomhomes.com), so it wasn’t as daunting as it might otherwise have been. Making decisions was the hardest part. And we seriously blew the budget. It’s an all EIFS exterior, so we’re sealed up tight in here.
The small black structure is my 20′ Wx 30′ L x 10′ H workshop. We built that first to store all our house stuff during the demo and now it’s all mine. The maple slab desk with the bow-ties is my new office desk and the first substantial thing I made in the workshop since we moved in. I bought the slab from Arnold, built my own router sled to flatten it (despite Arnold having one) and am now using it in my office. Next project is a English Walnut desk for our library, then a dining room table, foyer table, and I’ll keep going. There is great peace working with wood. And in these times in my business – any business – we can use some peace.
