Help Wanted: STEAM Career Explorers
Art is the season’s must-have accessory for classes in science, technology, engineering and math – it’s STEM meets STEAM
My name is Emily Ziegler and I am the director of technology and woodworking teacher at St. Paul’s School for Girls.
We are hosting an event next Thursday (Nov 10th) called STEAM Career Explorers targeted to Baltimore area students from 4-6PM to expose students to careers in STEM.
I would love to have the woodworking community represented at this event. Would someone from your group be interested in participating? You are welcome to advertise your classes and the tool library. Details are below; please let me know if you have any questions!
Volunteer Needs:
Volunteers are needed from STEAM industries or careers who would be able to work with students in hands-on activity stations to get students excited and interested about careers in their field. Volunteers can either create an activity to do with the students or can ask our coordinators to create an activity the students will participate in with you.
Activities should take between 10-15 minutes and should showcase something about a STEAM career. Every 15 minutes, students will rotate from station to station every 15 minutes in groups of 7-10.
For example, an activity that a graphic designer might do would be to show how to change colors on a picture using Photoshop. A biologist might bring specimens to investigate for particular traits. A computer engineer might show how code could change the animation on a screen. An interior designer might show how support beams need to be used to make sure a wall is supported with Legos or a 3D model. The possibilities are endless; our hope is that you bring your expertise to get students excited about the STEAM fields. You are welcome to advertise your company with your activity.
What I will need:
1. The activity you are planning
2. Any needs you have from the school (computers, tables etc.) for your activity
3. Is this more appropriate for high or middle school
