Help Wanted: Custom Made Maple Cabinet Repair – Paid Commission
I’m the director of the research library for the history of Montgomery County. We were gifted a hand-crafted maple cabinet, custom-made to hold a set of atlas books that are oversized. The cabinet has a display-shelf top, with sliding shelves below (see attached pics). It is very well-made, but has been much abused over the years. The frame is wobbly and the shelves don’t fit smoothly in the slots anymore, fall through, don’t fit level into the grooves, etc. There’s a big crack in the top display slab and several of the shelves are also chipped and cracked in a couple cases, lots of scuffs and scratches on the legs and sides. Also someone added screws at some point to try to support the shelves, so many of them have deep scratches from scraping over those screws with heavy weight on them.
I’m not an expert, but my father is a woodworker. Based on what I’ve picked up from him, it looks to me like it needs to be taken apart, reglued/repaired to restore the integrity of the construction, holes/scratches filled, and sanded/refinished as long as it’s in pieces.
It’s a bulky piece: 4 ft high, 2.5 ft deep, 2.5 ft wide, with six removable shelves, but I think it would fit in my SUV for transport.
I see from your website that you are primarily a custom builder, but I thought you might be willing to do a restoration project as a one-off thing—OR—that you might be able to recommend someone else who might be interested in the project. My father is based in Michigan, so I don’t have any connections to the woodworker world here in Maryland/MoCo. Just looking for a place to start, advice, etc.
