Free Wood: Walnut Branches in Laurel
Hi Gene,
I am in the process of taking down a standing dead black walnut tree. If any of your members want to look at the tree they are welcome to contact me. Today three limbs came off the tree. The tree is roughly 50 years old, I am working with the tree guys to save key portions of the trunk for crotch figuring and a large section of the bottom half of the trunk. My tree guy is working me in so this will not be a quick process but if anyone want any of the first three branches they are down. The leader has not been touched and the branch cuts are approximately 28 inches from the trunk to leave plenty of room for the largest part of the branches and the trunk figure. The wood is free to any of your members. If there is no interest I will have it cut and stacked for firewood. LOCATED IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT IN LAUREL, MD.
As requested I took a couple of shots of the walnut that is on the ground. I realized they are cut into 48” lengths, however I had a meeting of the minds with the tree guy and explained how I wanted the limbs and tree cut on the off chance a guild member would want some or all of the wood. I estimate that there are three good, figured crotches in the trunk and leader. If you have a member who would like to specify how he/she would like future cuts made I am more than happy to work with them. No cost, I know what it is like to have to pay for interesting wood. As a fellow woodworker this is my gift to the craft.
